Ayurveda

Millennial wisdom

What is Ayurveda?

It is an integrated medical system used for more than five thousand years in India.

Ayurveda means in Sanskrit, Science (Veda) of Life (Ayur).

It remains the official medicine in India and has spread throughout the world as an effective technique of traditional medicine.

Ayurvedic medicine is known as the mother of medicine because its principles and studies were the basis for the development of traditional Chinese, Arabic, Roman and Greek medicine.

For Ayurveda, the disease is much more than the manifestation of unpleasant or dangerous symptoms.

It understands that if minor imbalances are not corrected, they tend to increase with the passage of time, causing illnesses.

As an integral science, it considers that disease begins long before it reaches the stage at which it can finally be perceived.

Composition

Elements

The basis of Ayurvedic medicine considers five elements that are present in the composition of everything that exists, through its energies from lowest to highest density:

• Akasha – Space;

• Vayu – Air;

• Agni – Fire;

• Jala – Water;

• Prithvi – Earth.

Physical-psychic type

Doshas

The greater or lesser presence of all these energies, establish the physical-psychic types or Doshas of each individual:

The definition of dominant and sub-dominant doshas represent the nature and behavior of each individual and can be classified as innate and acquired.

Balance can be obtained through diet, exercise and massage.

Doshas are defined by:

• Physical traits that translate into the physical descriptions of the person, for example, height, complexion, eyes and etc;

• Mental and behavioral traits that translate into the kind of person we are, how we sleep, dream and think, how we react to external situations, our emotional strengths and weaknesses, our attitude toward money, whether we are spenders, misers or money managers;

• Intellectual traits that translate into whether we are thinkers and dreamers, designers and planners, or quiet people who work hard;

• Diseases and traits that are responsible for the fact that different species of climate, food, environment are beneficial or harmful to us.

Space and Air

Vata

Mental and Idealizer

Its characteristics are to be light, dry and cold.

They are usually thin, active and often have dry skin and are more sensitive to cold.

They should avoid bitter foods as well as cold and moisture.

Vata imbalances can eventually lead to intestinal constipation, lack of taste, osteoporosis, vertigo, exhaustion and fatigue.

Fire and some water

Pitta

Emotion and Transformation

Its characteristics are warm, oily and light.

They are active people with good physical conformation. They tend to be nervous and easily irritable.

They should avoid salty and spicy foods, so as not to increase the digestive fire.

In case of disharmony of Pitta, the initial symptom is fever and infections, which may reflect in heart, stomach and arthritis diseases.

Water and Earth

Kapha

Structure and Materialization

Its characteristics are humid, heavy and cold.

Usually they are people of calm temperament, with greater body mass, more resistant both for diseases like for physical activities.

They should avoid damp, cold, and heavy foods like pasta and rice.

In case of Kapha imbalance, this usually manifests as excess mucus, respiratory problems, obesity and diabetes.

Reflection

Text extracted from the book Perfect Health by Indian physician Deepak Chopra:

We are the only creatures on the face of the earth capable of changing our biology by what we think and feel!

Our cells are constantly snooping on our thoughts and being modified by them.

An outbreak of depression can overwhelm your immune system; falling in love, on the contrary, can fortify it tremendously.

Joy and fulfillment keep us healthy and prolong life.

The memory of a stressful situation, which is nothing more than a thread of thought, releases the same flow of destructive hormones as stress.

Anyone who is depressed because of a job loss projects sadness all over the body - the production of neurotransmitters by the brain is reduced, the hormone level is low, the sleep cycle is interrupted, the neuropeptidic receptors on the outer surface of the skin cells become distorted, blood platelets become more viscous and more prone to lumps, and even their tears contain different chemical traits of tears of joy.

All this biochemical profile will be drastically altered when the person finds a new position.

This reinforces the great need to use our consciousness to create the bodies we really want.

Anxiety because of an examination ends up happening, as well as depression because of a lost job.

The aging process, however, has to be tackled every day.

Shakespeare was not being metaphorical when Prosper said: "We are made of the same matter of dreams."

Do you want to know how your body is today? Remember what you thought yesterday.

Do you want to know how your body's going to be tomorrow? Look at your thoughts today!

Either you open your heart, or some cardiologist will do it for you!
